BOZEMAN,
MT (May 7, 2026) The recently published 2026 Economic Impact Study of Montana
Airports conducted by the Montana Department of Transportation in partnership
with Zenith Economics, LLC, underscores the critical role aviation plays in
supporting Montana’s economy and highlights how airports are directly tied to
the success of the communities they serve. The study illustrates that aviation is not
only a gateway for tourism, but a key driver of business development, workforce
mobility, education, healthcare, trade, and cargo movement. As Montana’s
economy continues to diversify and expand, the aviation system evolves
alongside.
According
to the study, Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) generates the
largest economic impact of any airport in Montana, totaling $2.2 billion
annually. Furthermore, BZN accounts for approximately one-third of total
statewide aviation jobs, output, payroll, and 40.8% of total visitor spending
impacts statewide, reinforcing its role as a key economic engine for the
region. BZN serves the communities of
Southwest Montana including Belgrade, Bozeman and Livingston, supports tourism
to Big Sky and Yellowstone National Park, and connects travelers to higher
education at Montana State University and Gallatin College. Each of these
reflect our region’s strength and momentum which successively drives increased
demand throughout our region.
As
Southwest Montana continues to grow, it becomes increasingly more attractive to
airlines. In response, our airlines offer nonstop service to 29 destinations,
with strong connectivity to both east and west coast markets. Over the past 25
years, BZN has experienced the fastest growing demand among the top 100
airports in the United States, a trend that closely mirrors the trajectory of
our surrounding community. In 2026, BZN is on track to serve a projected 2.9
million passengers.
The
rise in demand extends well beyond commercial air service. BZN supports a wide
range of successful aviation activity, including general and business aviation,
cargo operations, fixed base operators (FBO’s), the Gallatin College Aviation
program, and a growing aerial firefighting presence that plays an increasingly
important role across the region. Our local aviation sector represents 20% of
the local workforce by supporting 2,000 direct jobs at the airport and 11,000
indirect jobs across the valley. In order to keep pace with infrastructure, BZN
will have roughly 200 construction workers on site as we continue to improve
capacity and support our community’s growth.
This
Economic Impact Study reinforces the essential role aviation plays in Montana’s
future. It underlines our responsibility to ensure when businesses grow, when
tourism expands, and when residents need access to the world, the airport is
ready to meet those needs safely and efficiently.
